Sinonasal Malignant Melanoma Subspecialty

Malignant melanoma, which can occur in the skin, mucosa and other parts, originates from neural crest cells that can produce melanin. The incidence of mucosal malignant melanoma accounts for 4% of all melanomas. Mucosal malignant melanoma has a very high degree of malignancy, strong aggression and high probability of distant metastasis, and a very poor prognosis. About 70% of the head and neck mucosal malignant melanomas occur in the paranasal sinus area. Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) has a high degree of malignancy, with a 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. Surgery is an important part of multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment.

Since the establishment of nasal skull base surgery team in EENT Hospital affiliated to Fudan University in 2000, over 200 patients with SNMM have been treated. Our team has accumulated rich experience in endoscopic and open approach surgery, and has a multidisciplinary treatment team including otolaryngology department, neurosurgery department, radiotherapy/ chemotherapy department, imaging department, pathology department and other departments. The diagnosis and treatment mode of our team has reached the world-class level. Previous experience summary of malignant melanoma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus has been included in BMC Cancer, ACTA Oto-Laryngologica.

In April 2021, Fudan EENT Sinonasal Malignant Melanoma Subspecialty was officially established. The sub-department is led by doctor Song Xiaole. Professor Wang Dehui and Professor Yu Hongmeng participated in the guidance. The backbone members include otolaryngology experts and neurosurgery experts in the nasal skull base surgery team of our hospital. Meanwhile, the subspecialty has strong support from a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment team. Fudan EENT Sinonasal Malignant Melanoma Subspecialty is an important part of the construction of " extensive rhinology, subspecialty ", aiming to strengthen the direct connection between the disease and the specialty, provide patients with more professional and accurate diagnosis and treatment plan in a "package", so as to maximize the integration of resources and bring benefits to patients with malignant melanoma.

At present, Fudan EENT Sinonasal Malignant Melanoma Subspecialty is carrying out a number of prospective clinical studies. In the future, we will focus on the optimization of surgical techniques, multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment strategies for malignant melanoma of nasal cavity and sinuses, so as to further improve the survival rate of patients and quality of life.
