The Cataract and Lens Diseases Group has nine eye doctors with senior professional title: five with senior title and four with vice-senior title, including four PhD supervisors and five master supervisors. The Group is led by Prof. Lu Yi, the president of Eye Institute of Eye & Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital, Fudan University, the chairman of Vision Rehabilitation Committee, Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the deputy head of Cataract Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society, and the director of Shanghai Quality Control Center of Clinical Ophthalmology.
Doctors of this group specialize in diagnosing and treating all types of cataract and lens diseases, with surgical volumes among the highest nationwide. They address large numbers of complicated cases referred by other hospitals and achieve remarkable clinical and basic science research output. Major achievements of recent years include the Microinvasive Treatment of Congenital Lens Diseases (the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shanghai in 2017), the Key Technology of Microinvasive Cataract Surgery and Clinical Applications (the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shanghai in 2009), the Etiology and Treatment of Congenital Cataract (the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shanghai in 2006), and the Genetics and Treatment of Infantile Cataract (the Second Prize of Institution of Higher Education Science and Technology Progress in 2006). Great progress in treatment of lens diseases has been made in recent years with quantities of original research articles published on authoritative domestic and international ophthalmological journals, especially breakthroughs in areas of highly myopic cataract, congenital lens diseases, and complicated lens luxation. They also actively perform femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implantation, and presbyopia-correcting surgery. Two subspecialty centers were newly founded in 2020: Refractive Cataract Surgery Center and Precision Medical Center of Congenital Cataract.
More than 40 national, provincial and ministerial, and municipal and bureau-level research projects have been undertaken here, including 26 funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, with over 10 million yuan of funds. Numbers of quality research articles are published in SCI journals every year and over 200 have been published. Many national patents have been obtained.
Precision Medical Center of Congenital Cataract provides advanced eye care for mainly two eye conditions: congenital cataract and congenital lens subluxation.
The annual surgical volume of congenital cataract is about 500. Research achievements including “Etiology and Treatment of Congenital Cataract”, “Key Technology of Microinvasive Cataract Surgery and Clinical Applications”, and “Genetics and Treatment of Infantile Cataract” were twice awarded as the Second Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress and the Second Prize of Institution of Higher Education Science and Technology Progress, which are well-acknowledged by peers. For science popularization, the Center has established the Home of Congenital Cataract Baby, jointly with Propaganda and Civilization Office of the hospital, holding regular offline activities of doctor-patient communication, providing online popular science articles push via official account, and setting up WeChat group for question-and-answer, which is getting increasing impact.
The annual surgical volume of congenital lens subluxation is about 350. The Center takes the lead in large-scale application and study of MCTR in treatment of lens subluxation and has founded diagnosis and treatment system of congenital lens subluxation and standardized follow-up, mainly for patients with congenital lens zonular weakness like Marfan syndrome, simple ectopia lentis, spherophakia, lens coloboma, and anterior megalophthalmos. Lens Luxation Forum and WeChat group for ophthalmologists and official account of Dr.Jiang’s Talk on Lens Luxation were also established for peers and patients to communicate, which has simultaneously expanded the influence of the group.
With accumulation of rich experience in management of congenital lens diseases, our center is nationally ranked in diagnosis and treatment level of this subspecialty.
Modern cataract surgery has evolved from a sight-restoring procedure into a refractive procedure. The Refractive Cataract Surgery Center offers patients a cataract surgery with simultaneous correction of refractive error, aiming to ameliorate the condition of astigmatism and to achieve spectacle-independence after the surgery.
The Refractive Cataract Surgery Center provides a variety of premium refractive intraocular lenses (IOLs), including monofocal astigmatism-correcting IOL, multifocal astigmatism-correcting IOL, multifocal IOL, trifocal IOL, extended depth of focus IOL, segmented bifocal IOL, etc., of which the most appropriate one will be chosen according to the patients’ need. Equipped with advanced optical biometers and visual function analyzer including IOLMaster 700, Pentacam, OPD Scan, iTrace, OQAS, etc. and backed with femtosecond laser and intraoperative navigation system, the Center offers accurate state-of-the-art refractive cataract surgery.
In addition, the Refractive Cataract Surgery Center also conducts premarket clinical trials of novel IOLs and the real-world studies. Over 50 articles have been published on SCI journals in relevant areas and over 10 research projects of provincial and ministerial level or above have been undertaken here.
